Urinary tract infections: a cost to society and national health systems<\/h2>\n

In Italy, urinary tract infections are <\/span>one of the leading causes of nosocomial infection in hospitals and other health care facilities.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to data from the Italian Ministry of Health, <\/span>14,566 nosocomial urinary tract infections were reported in 2020<\/b>, with an incidence rate of 8.5 cases per 1,000 inpatient days.<\/p>\n

In Europe and around the world, urinary tract infections are also an <\/span>important public health problem<\/b> with significant health care costs.<\/p>\n

According to a study published in the journal “PLoS ONE” in 2018, healthcare-associated urinary tract infections caused <\/span> 2.5 million additional hospital days and additional costs of 676 million euros in European Union countries in 2015.<\/b><\/p>\n
